Fly Fishing 201 – Crooked River

From rods, reels and lines to roll, tension and traditional casting, River’s Bend Fly Fishing Guides give you a comprehensive introduction to fly fishing including nymphing and dry fly fishing techniques.  In our Beginning Fly Fishing class, 201, you will learn the basics of gear identification and assembly, reading water, entomology and fly selection, nymph casting, dry fly casting, hooking and fighting fish and catch & release methodology.

Our 6-hour Fly Fishing 201 class is taught on the Crooked River and covers the following concepts:

  • Fly Fishing Terminology
  • Fly Fishing Gear Introduction, Identification, Selection, Proper Assembly and Use
  • Knot Tying – Learn the clinch, surgeon’s, and perfection knots and their uses
  • Fly Casting  – Learn to traditional cast, tension cast and roll cast
  • Presentation Techniques – Both nymph and dry fly techniques
  • Hooking, Fighting and Landing Fish – Redside Trout and Mountain White Fish
  • Catch & Release Techniques – Handle fish with care and release unharmed
  • All this and as much fishing as we can fit in

$200 per person, for 2 people, $100 per addition person, 2-person minimum.

Fly Fishing 301 – Crooked River or Deschutes River

Our Intermediate Fly Fishing class, 301, is focused on taking people who have a solid grasp of the concepts presented in our Beginning Fly Fishing classes and building on that knowledge to take your fly fishing to the next level.  We like to help you to go from getting the occasional fish to consistently hooking more and bigger fish.  Students should have a decent grasp, if not mastery, of the concepts presented in our Beginner Fly Fishing class, Fly Fishing 201.

Our 8-hour Fly Fishing 301 class is taught on the Crooked River or the Deschutes River and covers the following concepts:

  • Intermediate Fly Casting  – Refine the traditional, tension and roll casts and learn basic single-handed spey techniques
  • Intermediate Presentation Techniques – Target fish with nymph and dry fly casting techniques that will present your flies to fish more effectively
  • Line Maintenance & Mending – Learn to handle and fish more line, more efficiently
  • Pocket Water Fishing – Learn why and where big fish live
  • Intermediate Entomology – Identify aquatic and flying insect species and match your nymphs and dry flies to the naturals
  • Catch & Release Techniques – Handle fish with care and release unharmed
  • All this and as much fishing as we can fit in

$400 for 1-2 people, $100 for the 3rd person – Crooked River

$500 for 1-2 people, $25 for the 3rd person – Deschutes River

Fly Fishing 401 & 501 – Lower Deschutes River

Our Advanced Fly Fishing class, 401, is focused on introducing intermediate-level fly fishermen to Big River Fly Fishing concepts.  It is essentially a Full-Day Float Trip on the Lower Deschutes River with an emphasis on instruction.  Concepts may include: big river dry fly and nymphing techniques, intermediate and advanced riggings, entomology, fly selection, knot tying, reading water, drift boat handling, and more.  This class is catered to the level and desires of the students.

Our Steelhead Fly Fishing class, 501, is truly grad school for fly fishing.  We introduce you to the concepts of fly fishing for the elusive and mighty Steelhead through single-handed and two-handed (spey) techniques.  We go through the equipment and techniques that will focus your efforts on hooking and landing one of these incredible fish.

$500 for 1-2 people, $25 for the 3rd person
